COMPARISON
The best AI for YouTube Shorts, and why the TikTok list does not transfer
Shorts gets searched, runs longer and feeds a channel. Three differences that change which tools are worth paying for.
We make Write Shorts, listed under scripts below next to the free alternatives. Nothing else on this page is ours and we earn nothing from any of it.
Try it on a Short before you read the list
Paste a Short, Reel or TikTok that performed. Every other tool worth considering is compared below.
See it work
A real video in, a real script out
Twenty-three seconds, start to finish. No edits, nothing sped up.
Has sound · 23 seconds
SIDE BY SIDE
What each one is actually for
Sorted by the job, because a caption tool and a script tool are not competing.
vidIQ / TubeBuddy
Free tier + paid
Shows what people search before you decide what to film.
Titles and keywords only. No equivalent value on TikTok.
Opus Clip / Klap
Free tier + paid
Cuts long videos into Shorts automatically.
A cut-out clip opens mid-thought and usually needs a new first line written for it.
ElevenLabs
Free tier + paid
AI voice, which more Shorts rely on than TikToks.
Once the voice is common in your niche, the script has to carry the difference.
CapCut
Free tier + paid
Editing and captions.
Covers presentation. Does nothing about structure.
ChatGPT / Claude
Free tier + paid
Writes a script from a topic.
Generic by default, and the sameness shows fastest on faceless channels.
Write Shorts
$24.99/mo
Writes a script from a link to a video that already performed, in that video's structure, about your subject.
No free tier and no trial. Writes words, not video. Cannot promise anything performs.

People copy their TikTok setup across to Shorts and wonder why the numbers do not follow. The tools are not the problem. The format is different in three ways that change which tools matter.
- Shorts get searched. A Short can surface months later from a search or a suggestion. A TikTok mostly lives or dies in its first 48 hours. That makes the title and the subject carry long-term weight.
- The runway is longer. Up to three minutes now, and a lot of what performs runs past 60 seconds. A structure built for 20 seconds falls apart stretched to 90.
- It feeds a channel. Shorts viewers can become subscribers to a body of work. A close that earns a follow is worth more here than on a feed people scroll past.
Titles and thumbnails — the TikTok list ignores this
Because Shorts surface in search and suggestions, the title does real work long after posting. TubeBuddy and vidIQ both have free tiers built around this, and both will tell you what people are typing before you decide what to film. Neither has an equivalent worth bothering with on TikTok, where the caption matters far less.
Voice, for the faceless end of Shorts
A larger share of Shorts is made without anyone on camera, so voice tooling matters more here. ElevenLabs is where most faceless channels land. The trade is that the voice stops being a differentiator the moment everyone in your niche uses the same one — the script has to carry the difference instead. That problem is written up in the scripting problem with faceless channels.
Cutting long video down
If you already make long videos, Opus Clip and Klap find the segments worth clipping and cut them for you. This is the single biggest time saver available on Shorts and it has no real TikTok counterpart, because fewer TikTok creators have long footage to mine.
Scripts
ChatGPT or Claude, free, will write from a topic. Expect fluent and generic — a topic tells a model the subject and nothing about the shape.
Write Shorts — ours — takes a link to a Short, Reel or TikTok that already performed, works out the structure underneath it, and writes your version in that shape. $24.99 a month or $149 a year, no free tier. It writes words, not video. The full case is on the AI script generator page.
The repurposing trap
Reposting a TikTok to Shorts unchanged is the most common thing people do and the most reliably disappointing. The pacing that suits a feed you flick through at speed reads as rushed to someone who arrived from a search and chose to watch.
Rebuilding the same idea for the format takes minutes and performs differently. The three levels of doing this — repost, re-edit, rebuild — are set out in content repurposing.
THREE STEPS
Link in. Script out. About a minute.
- 01
Paste the video
Any TikTok, Reel or Short that's working in your niche, up to three minutes long. No topic to type — you pasted from your own feed, so the subject is already right.
- 02
It pulls the video apart
What held people, where the turn lands, what she left out. Then your version writes itself out in front of you — same shape, your subject, hook to close.
- 03
Copy it and film
One tap. It's in your notes. Go shoot.

QUESTIONS
What Shorts creators ask
Yes. CapCut for editing, vidIQ and TubeBuddy free tiers for titles and keywords, ChatGPT or Claude for topic-based scripts.
You can, and plenty of people do. It usually underperforms, because Shorts viewers often arrive by search and expect the video to pay off rather than grab.
Long enough to finish the idea. The format allows up to three minutes, and structure matters more than length — a 90-second Short that holds beats a 30-second one that wanders.
Rebuild it for Shorts instead of reposting it
Paste the video you were about to repost and get a version built for this format.
Paid plans only — there is no free tier. $24.99 a month, or $149 a year.
