How to make a viral video: the part that is about people, not algorithms

Holding attention gets you distribution. Being worth forwarding is what turns distribution into reach.

Almost everything written about viral videos is about retention — how to stop the scroll, how to hold attention, when to turn. That is real and it is covered properly in what is actually under your control.

It is also only half the story, and the half that gets less attention is the one that produces the outlier numbers. Retention gets a video shown to more people. Sharing is what carries it into rooms the platform was never going to reach.

The two different jobs

Most people write

Held attention. Watched to the end. Shown to more people. Grew steadily.

What holds

Held attention and got forwarded. Each send carried a recommendation the platform could not manufacture.

A video can be excellent at the first and useless at the second. Plenty of genuinely good videos perform respectably and never travel, because nothing in them gave anybody a reason to pass them on.

Four reasons people send a video to someone

1. It says something they believe and could not phrase

Sending it is cheaper than making the argument themselves. This is why a clearly stated position travels further than a balanced survey of a topic — balance is harder to forward because it does not stand for anything.

2. It is about a specific person they know

Not a demographic. A person. The more precisely a video describes one type of behaviour, the more likely a viewer thinks of a name and forwards it. Broad videos get watched; narrow ones get sent.

Broad, then narrow

Broad: how to be better with money in your twenties.

Narrow: the person who checks their bank app four times a day and never opens the savings one.

3. It is useful enough to be worth keeping

A save is a private send. Something specific and practical enough to return to gets kept, and saves carry real weight on most platforms because they are hard to fake.

4. Sending it makes the sender look good

Uncomfortable but true. People forward things that make them look informed, funny, or early. A video that gives the sender something is forwarded more than one that only gives the viewer something.

Why most advice skips this

Retention is measurable and teachable. You can count seconds and fix a structure. Sharing is a judgement about people, and judgement does not fit neatly into a list of tips, so it quietly gets dropped from them.

It is also why videos that follow every structural rule still sometimes go nowhere. The structure was right and there was no reason to pass it on.

What this changes about your ending

Most videos end by asking for a follow. A follow helps you. A send helps you more, and asking for one works better when the video has already earned it — when it named someone recognisable, or said the thing plainly.

This differs by platform. Instagram rewards sends heavily, YouTube Shorts rewards a subscribe that comes from a body of work, TikTok rewards completion most of all. The same idea therefore wants different endings in different places, which is the practical heart of content repurposing.

Can you plan for it

Partly. You cannot decide a video travels. You can refuse to publish one that nobody has a reason to forward, and that single filter removes a lot of competent, forgettable content.

The structural half is more controllable, and borrowing the shape of a video that already did travel in your niche is the most direct way to get it. That is what Write Shorts does from a link — and it still cannot tell you whether anybody will send yours on.

Questions people ask

Is going viral mostly luck?
A large part of it is timing and who sees it first, neither of which you control. Structure and whether it is worth forwarding are the parts you do.
Do shares matter more than views?
They carry further. A share puts you in front of someone with a personal recommendation attached, which no amount of distribution replicates.
Should I ask people to share?
It helps when the video has given them a reason. Asking without one mostly gets ignored.

Your turn, with a video that already worked

Paste a TikTok, Reel or Short from your own niche. You get the same shape back, written about your subject, in your words.
