Content ideas for TikTok, when the list has stopped working
You have not run out of things to say. You have run out of shapes to say them in.
Search for TikTok content ideas and you get a list of topics. Fifty video ideas for your niche. They work for about a week, and then you are back where you started, which is the second clue that topics were never the problem.
The problem is shapes. You know plenty about your subject. What you have run out of is ways to arrange it so somebody stays.
Why topic lists burn out so fast
A topic is single use. Film it and it is gone. A format is reusable — one shape produces a video every week for a year because the subject changes while the structure stays.
Most people write
Idea: a video about why sunscreen matters. Used once, gone.
What holds
Format: the thing you did wrong for years. Works for sunscreen, retinol, cleansing, every week for a year.
Twelve formats that keep producing
Built on a mistake
- The thing I did wrong for years. You, the mistake, how long it ran, the correction.
- The advice everyone repeats that is wrong. Name the standard line, dismantle it, replace it.
- The mistake I still see weekly. Positions you as someone who watches, without claiming you never made it.
Built on a comparison
- This versus that. Two options, your call, your reason. The reason is the video.
- Cheap version versus expensive version. Whether the price difference buys anything.
- What I did then versus what I do now. Shows change over time, which is hard to fake.
Built on a process
- How I actually do this. Not the recommended way. The real way, including the shortcut.
- The step everyone skips. One step, why it matters, what happens without it.
- Start to finish in under a minute. Compression is the appeal.
Built on a response
- Answering a real question. From a comment, a DM, a client. Real questions are better than invented ones and everyone can tell.
- Reacting to something in your niche. A claim someone made, agreed with or taken apart.
- The question I get every week. If you are asked often, the search volume exists.
Turning one format into a month
Take one format. List every subject in your niche it could carry. That list is usually longer than you expect, and it is four weeks of content from a single shape.
Format: the thing I did wrong for years.
Week 1: the product I defended that did nothing.
Week 2: the routine order I had backwards.
Week 3: the advice I gave clients and later withdrew.
Week 4: the thing I spent money on for three years.
Where to find formats that are working now
The twelve above are a starting set, not the whole world. The renewable source is the feed you are already scrolling: when a video in your niche holds you, stop and work out its shape rather than its subject.
Four numbers do it — where the opening line stopped, when the complication arrived, when it turned, what the close asked for. The method is in how to go viral on TikTok, and Write Shorts does the same reading automatically from a pasted link if you would rather not run a stopwatch.
If you are not on camera
Most of these work faceless with small changes — the mistake formats become voiceover over b-roll, and the process formats become screen or hand footage. What changes is that the writing has to carry more, which is covered in the scripting problem with faceless channels.
Questions people ask
- How often should I post on TikTok?
- Often enough to keep learning, sustainably. Three a week you can maintain beats daily for two weeks and then nothing.
- Is it bad to reuse a format?
- No. Viewers notice subjects, not structures. Most established accounts run a handful of shapes continuously.
- What if my niche is boring?
- Niches are not boring, formats are. The same tax or logistics subject lands completely differently as a mistake you made than as a list of facts.
